Une semaine en Allemagne du Nord / A week in Northern Germany – Lübeck & Ratzeburg

Jour 4 de nos vacances au Nord ! Je vous emmène à Lubeck. Vous n’en avez jamais entendu parler ? Tant mieux, comme ça vous allez apprendre plein de choses ! 🙂

Day 4 of our holidays in the North! I am taking you to Lübeck. Never heard of it? Great news, you’ll learn a lot then! 🙂

Mon premier conseil pour Lubeck : rendez-vous à l’office de tourisme pour acheter (1€, rien de trop cher) une carte de la ville qui comprend un circuit très bien fait, qui vous fait passer par tous les points d’intérêt, en vous donnant quelques explications au passage. Méfiez-vous de la durée qu’ils indiquent : ils écrivent « 90 minutes sans visite », mais au total, nous avons passé environ 6h30 dans la ville, en comptant la pause repas et la pause goûter.

Le circuit compte 24 arrêts, et la boucle fait passer dans toute la ville. On y va ?

My first tip for Lübeck: go to the tourist information office to buy (€1, nothing too expensive) a city map that includes a very well made walking tour, that makes you go to all interesting sightseeing, and that gives you a few explanations about them. Be careful, they indicate a duration of « 90 minutes without the visits » but in total we spent about 6h30 in the city, including our lunch break and another break later in the afternoon.

The tour stops at 24 points and the loop goes through the whole city. Let’s go!

Holsentor

Cette énorme porte est l’emblème de la ville. Elle abrite un musée sur le commerce international et la navigation, dont l’entrée coûte 5€.

This huge gate is the city’s emblem. It hosts a museum on international commerce and navigation, and the entrance costs €5.

Salzspeicher : les greniers à sel / the salt stores

Le sel, ça vous rappelle quelque chose ? Mais siii ! Lunebourg, la ligue hanséatique tout ça tout ça ! Lübeck contrôlait le commerce du sel de la ligue hanséatique, dont elle était d’ailleurs la capitale.

Salt, does it ring a bell? Yeees, Lüneburg, the Hanseatic league and all that! Lübeck had the control of the salt trade in the Hanseatic league, and it was actually the capital of the league.

Alors qu’Hambourg a été bien détruite à plusieurs reprises, Lübeck a eu la chance de conserver son centre historique.

Whereas Hamburg was several times much destroyed, Lübeck was lucky enough to keep its historical center.

 

Große Petersgrube

Il s’agit de la seule rue qui réunit tous les styles architecturaux de la ville : gothique, Renaissance, baroque, rococo, classique. Ca en fait des styles !

It is the only street where all the city’s architectural styles are gathered: Gothic, Renaissance, baroque, rococo, classical. Quite a lot of styles!

L’église St-Pierre / St Peter church

Une église romaine, construite entre 1227 et 1250, reconvertie en centre de congrès et d’exposition. Le clocher se visite pour 4€.

A Roman church, built between 1227 and 1250, converted into a congress and exhibition center. The bell tower can be visited for €4.

Devant l’église, une drôle de vue : ces maisons qui sortent de nulle part ! Avez-vous remarqué que les façades sont en fait plates ? Tout ça n’est que du vent : il n’y a rien derrière, c’est juste pour faire semblant d’avoir de l’argent !

In front of the church, a funny sight: these houses that come out from nowhere! Have you noticed that the facades are actually flat? It’s just hot air: there is nothing behind it, it’s just to pretend to have money!

L’église Herz-Jesu / Herz-Jesu church

Bon, je vous le dis tout de suite : on en a bouffé des églises !! Je vous avoue que si vous me montrez toutes mes photos d’églises de la semaine, je suis incapable de les distinguer les unes des autres ! Toutes des églises en brique rouge aux toits verts… J’en faisais une overdose ! Mais bon, je veux mériter mon titre de blogueuse voyage (attribuée à moi-même, par moi-même), donc je vous parle de toutes les fichues églises et cathédrales que j’ai vues, et j’essaie de leur trouver des particularités… 😉

Celle-ci est une église catholique qui ne présente rien de spécial à l’extérieur, mais à l’intérieur se trouve une exposition gratuite sur les martyrs de Lübeck. Quatre hommes d’église, de religions différentes, se sont unis pour s’opposer aux Nazis. Vous pouvez vous en douter, ça n’a pas bien fini : ils ont été guillotinés en 1943.

OK, let me get that straight for you: we saw A LOT of churches!! I have to admit that if you show me all the photos I took from churches during the week, I’ll be unable to distinguish them from another! All are churches with red bricks and green roofs… I made an overdose at the end! But oh well, I wat to deserve my title of travel blogger (that I myself attributed to myself) so I will tell you about all the fecking churches and cathedrals I have seen, and I will try to tell you why they are special… 😉

This one is a Catholic church that is not very special outside. but hosts inside a free exhibition about the martyrs of Lübeck. Four churchmen, from different religions, united to oppose the Nazis. As you can guess, it did not end well: they were guillotined in 1943.

La cathédrale / the cathedral

(avec des briques rouges et un toit vert…) Bon Nounoush c’est quoi sa particularité à elle ? Hé bien, figurez-vous que c’est l’un des plus anciens monuments de Lübeck et l’un des plus grands édifices à voûtes à brique d’Europe du Nord ! Ca vous en bouche un coin hein ? 😛

(with red bricks and a green roof) OK Nounoush what’s so special about this one? Well actually, it is one of the oldest monuments in Lübeck and one of the biggest buildings with brick vaults in Northern Europe! Mind blowing right? 😛

Je suis la seule à penser à The Great Gatsby en voyant cet orgue ? Anyone ?

Le couvent Sainte-Anne / Saint-Anne Convent

OK c’est quoi le souci avec les édifices religieux ?! Je sais, je sais. Dans ce couvent, se trouve un musée sur la vie et l’habitat des gens d’autrefois. Vous voyez ? A chaque bâtiment son petit plus 😉

OK what’s the deal with religious buidlings? I know, I know. Inside this convent is located a museum on life and environment of people in the past. See? To each buidling its specificity 😉

Il n’y a pas que des églises en Allemagne, il y a aussi des synagogues !

Ce qui devait arriva : je n’ai aucune idée du nom de cette église-là ! Hahaha !

Un truc hyper rare en Allemagne (et aux Pays-Bas, et en Suède aussi – j’en parlais ici :)) : des VOLETS ! WOW.

Une rue commerçante très sympa, piétonne le samedi de 10h à 18h !

Eglise Saint-Jacques / St James Church

Bâtie en 1334, c’est l’église des pèlerins et des marins. Le canot à l’intérieur de l’église commémore le naufrage du navire Pamir en 1957.

Built in 1334, it’s the church of pilgrims and sailors. The lifeboat inside the church commemorates the sinking of the ship Pamir in 1957.

L’hospice du Saint-Esprit / Hospice of the Holy Spirit

Bon à ce moment, les édifices religieux de Lübeck commençaient sérieusement à me courir sur le haricot. Mais cet hospice est une bonne surprise. Il s’agit d’un des premiers hôpitaux d’Europe et j’ai trouvé l’intérieur intéressant, même comparé à tout ce que je venais de voir. On peut visiter l’ensemble de l’hospice, qui est vraiment grand, mais évidemment c’était en travaux quand on y était.

Alright, at that moment, religious buildings in Lübeck were seriously starting to drive me nuts. But this hospice was a good surprise. It is one of the first hospitals in Europe and I found the inside interesting, even compared to everything I had just seen. You can visit the whole building, that’s really big, but of course it was under construction when we were there.

Le musée européen de la Hanse / European Hansemuseum

Juste à côté de Burgtor se trouve ce musée, qui retrace 800 ans d’histoire de la Hanse. Il est localisé sur l’ancienne colline du château.

This museum is located right next to Burgtor and relates 800 years of the history of the Hanse. It is on the old castle hill.

L’hôtel de ville / The city hall

Ce bâtiment aurait inspiré de nombreux hôtels de ville dans la région. Vous remarquerez les briques noires et non pas rouges ! Les visites guidées sont possibles sur réservation.

This building would have inspired several city halls in the region. You will notice the black bricks, not red this time! You can visit it through reservation.

Cette petite statue a une histoire. Juste derrière ce diable se trouve l’église Sainte Marie. Quand la construction de l’église commença, le diable croyait qu’il s’agissait d’un bar. Tout content, car il savait que les habitués du bar le rejoindrait plus tôt que les autres, il se mit à activement aider à la construction. Quand il se rendit compte que c’était en réalité une église et pas un bar, il prit une énorme pierre, fou de rage, et s’apprêta à la jeter sur l’église en travaux pour la détruire. Un bon bougre l’arrêta juste à temps, lui promettant qu’on lui construirait un bar en face de l’église, rien que pour lui. Satisfait de l’idée, il laissa tomber la pierre, où il repose encore aujourd’hui – et en effet, en face de l’église fut construit la cave à vin de l’hôtel de ville !

This small statue has a story. Right behind the devil is the Saint-Mary church. When the construction of the church started, the devil thought it would be a bar. Super happy, because he knew that people frequenting the bar would meet him sooner than others, he started to actively help with the construction. When he realized that it would actually be a church and not a bar, he grabbed a huge stone, full of anger, and was about to throw it at the church to destroy it. A good fella managed to stop him right on time, promising him that they would build a bar in front of the church, just for him. Satisfied with the idea, he dropped the stone, where he still lies today – and indeed, in front of church was built the wine cellar of the city hall!

Café Niederegger

La spécialité de Lübeck, outre les briques rouges à outrance et les églises partout, c’est la pâte d’amande ! Niederegger est le paradis de la pâte d’amande. On la trouve sous toutes les formes possibles et imaginables ! Au rez-de-chaussée se situe la boutique, et à l’étage, le café.

Lübeck’s specialty, beside the red bricks and the churches everywhere,  is marzipan! Niederegger is the paradise for marzipan’s lovers. You can find it in all possible shapes! The shop is located at the ground floor and the café at the first floor.

Si vous me connaissez, vous savez que je ne tiens pas en place – ça vient sans aucun doute de mon Papa… donc qui dit vacances avec lui, dit visites à gogo : après Lübeck, nous sommes allé.es terminer la journée sur la presqu’île de Ratzebourg. Tout comme Stade, il s’agit uniquement d’une petite échappée sympathique juste pour le plaisir des yeux !

La presqu’île se trouve à une petite demie-heure de Lübeck et est donc l’occasion parfaite pour voir quelque chose de nouveau et faire une pause paisible sur le chemin du retour.

If you know me, you know that I am always on the go – I most likely take that from my dad… so holidays with him are synonym with plenty of visits: after Lübeck, we went to Ratzeburg peninsula to finish the day. Just like Stade, it’s only a short and nice getaway just for the pleasure of the eyes! 

The peninsula is located about thirty minutes away from Lübeck and is thus the perfect opportunity to see something new and to make a peaceful break on the way back.

Même avec une overdose de bâtiments religieux et de briques rouges, je garde un excellent souvenir de Lübeck, une étape obligatoire dans votre passage dans la région !

Even with a overdose of religious buildings and red bricks, I keep some excellent memories from Lübeck, an obligatory step if you visit the region!
